Kampong Chhnang Villagers Helps Develops Tools for Promoting Family-Planning Practices

In December 2019, in Kampong Chhnang Province, near the provincial town, there is a small village called Prek Khmer, where the Promoting Healthy Behaviors (PHB) team met with local villagers to discuss Family Planning methods. The purpose was to also go further than just discussing the different methods.

The PHB team developed demonstration tools that showed couples the differences in family planning methods, helping them to decide which one was best for them. It also helped create an environment that was easy for the couples to talk about the different family planning methods.

There is often not a lot of information easily accessible to those in rural communities in Cambodia and the information that is available, is often not accurate. Therefore, the demonstration activities that took place were an important opportunity to engage both women and men in a safe and open environment in making sure accurate information was provided so couples can make the best decision for themselves.

The tools that were developed and tested in Kampong Chhnang were tested in small groups; meeting with couples that weren’t using any modern methods, a small men’s group, and a small women’s group. The different groups were able to help the PHB team narrow down the most effective tools to use to communicate and educate on family planning. The men and women that PHB were able to meet with, played a vital role in the future of family planning among health centers, health workers and the community.
