Sustainable Access to Health Products

As of 2018, there are no more donor funds to support commodities distribution in Cambodia. In spite of the decline in donor funding, PSI Cambodia remains committed to meeting the needs of lower income and vulnerable populations in Cambodia. In response to economic development and evolving donor trends, PSI Cambodia has recently begun to focus more on market dynamics and implementing interventions that aim at improving overall market functionality and sustainability. This work has led to the introduction of higher priced products that can cross-subsidize lower priced products; a revision of PSI’s product prices to leverage the purchasing power of its clients where possible; a more systematic support to private sector players for the distribution and supply of health products and services; and a close collaboration with the public sector to ensure that long term needs for health products are understood and articulated across all market players. This also support the Ministry of Health’s Strategic Plan in improving health and well-being of the population.

Social marketing is one of the most effective ways of motivating low-income and vulnerable people to adopt healthy behavior, including the use of needed health products and services.

Population Services International in Cambodia launched a social marketing campaign for Number One condoms in 1993. Since then, we have expanded our products to address the needs in reproductive health, family planning and child survival. Currently, we distribute condoms, birth spacing pills, medical abortion, and rehydrated salts.

PSI Cambodia promoted our commodities through an extensive mass media advertising and promotion campaign as well as social media. In addition, we also conduct Provider Behavior Change Communication (PBCC) which plays a significant role in reaching private providers to improve their quality of counselling, as well as to increase the use of PSI’s quality and safety products. We has also developed and implemented the PBCC mobile application, an up-to-date technology using the tablet for data collection.
